St Helens to be transformed with modernization of the station and new cycle paths
Funding of £ 14.8million has been secured for a project which will see an existing railway station modernized and new cycle paths introduced in St Helens.
The St Helens Council has secured liquidity for the St Helens Southern Gateway program.
Council says this will mean significant improvements to the borough’s transportation network, with an emphasis on sustainable modes of transportation.
The funding – allocated by the Liverpool City Region Transforming Cities Fund – will be used to introduce six new cycle lanes, as well as to improve the junction at the Bull and Dog roundabout to improve safety for all road users.
Shane Fitzpatrick, acting director of the Combined Authority for Integrated Transport and senior manager of the Cities Transformation Fund, said a “top priority” was “to invest in integrated transport programs that include cycling and walking “in the area.
St Helens City Council will provide the £ 4.8million of improvements to encourage safer cycling routes and to make walking routes safer, helping people to get to Lea Green station and to return.
Lisa Harris, general manager of Place Services in the Borough of St Helens Council, said that with the funding now in place, they can “further stimulate” the borough’s emerging active travel network.
Formerly known as the Eastern Region Interchange and Connectivity (ERIC), the work on the St Helens Southern Gateway will also improve cycling and walking access in the region.
The larger funding envelope will upgrade the existing Lea Green rail station and increase the capacity of the park and ride.
According to the council, since 2018 more services stop at the station and provide more possibilities to travel across the UK.
